The English are not particularly prone to metaphysical flights of fancy, but they have the virtue of common sense, which they know how to express with clarity and erudition. As a result, they often produce thinkers who appear as beacons when darkness reigns; such was the case with Aldous Huxley during the crisis of the last century and Roger Scruton in the current crisis.
